- The meaning.
- Our text was one verse given as the Biblical proof for the First Point that God has a favorable attitude toward all men.
- What is goodness?
- In general, “good” denotes two things.
- Jehovah is ”good.”
- He is good because he is ethically perfect; He pure goodness in His essence; He is light and no darkness.
- And He is able to accomplish all His purpose and will.
- Jehovah’s mercy is His goodness reaching those in misery and lifting them out of their misery up to His glory and blessedness
- What is the scope of God’s goodness and mercy? “All” and “all His works” refers to God’s creation.
- In the beginning the creation was a one great expression of God’s goodness - a beautiful working unit.
- After the fall into sin, creation was under God’s curse for man’s sake, making it subject to vanity (Rom. 8:20).
- “All” refers to God’s works as an organic whole.
- It refers to those humans and creation who praise God (10) who are redeemed in Christ and are made righteous.
- In the context of all Scripture and of this psalm “all” cannot refer to every person, head for head.
- God’s purpose for His goodness and mercies.
- In His goodness to Himself, His redeemed creation and children God uses the ungodly wicked to accomplish His purposes.
- The chief purpose of God’s goodness is His saving of a creation which deserves to be destroyed.
- “Taste and see that Jehovah is good” (Ps. 34:8) to all who fear Him and look for His appearing.
