Psalm 27:1-3
|
Psalters: |
52, 355, 126, 71 |
- The occasion.
- David faced enemies who desired his life (2).
- Some physical enemies were Goliath, the Philistines, Saul, Ahithophel, Absalom and others.
- Some were spiritual enemies: Satan to prevent David’s son from coming, and David’s own old man of sin.
- David experienced profound personal loss (10).
- David experienced the loss of God’s presence at times (9).
- In the light of such occasions for fear, how is it possible to express fearlessness?
- This is not because of self-confidence.
- The personal knowledge of Jehovah, as the God of my salvation.
- He is “my salvation.”
- He is the “strength of my life,” i.e., He gives me the ability to endure.
- And He is “my light.”
- The knowledge of Who God is and what He declares to be His relationship to us removes fear.
- This is (and must be) personal (there are 12 personal pronouns in our text).
- Faith is a personal work of God in my heart, showing me that He has united me to Him.
- Faith is confession and admission of personal weakness (which is the strength of the child of God).
- The result is personal fearlessness.
- Fearlessness arises from the confidence of faith.
- So when I am afraid, then I will put my trust in Him (Ps. 56:3). I will trust and not be afraid (Isa. 12:2).
