Text: Ephesians 1:22,23
Psalters: 163, 220, 131, 239
  1. His Headship over the body.
    1. Our text declares Christ to be exalted to the supreme position of having all things under Him.
      1. Jesus ascended to a position of all authority in heaven and on earth (Matt. 28:18; Phil. 2:9; I Peter 3:22; Rev. 5:12).
      2. He controls all of history (Rev. 5:1-6), so things are not moved by fate or chance or by the devil.
    2. Further, our text declares Jesus to be the Head of the church.
      1. He and the church are a spiritual organism, having one life, with His Spirit giving the life of the Head to each member.
      2. In addition, Jesus is the juridical Head of the church: its King ruling over her, governing her through history.
  2. Jesus fills all in all, filling everything giving purpose and meaning to everything.
    1. He is first before all things and for Him they were created (Col. 1:16b,17a; Eph. 1:10).
    2. While His glory fills everything in the world, His focus is on the church, the dearest of all to Him.
      1. He rules and governs everything in the interest of Himself and His church.
      2. Jesus fills the whole church and everyone in the church, from the most to the least significant member.
    3. God ordained the church to be the instrument through which the many riches of God’s perfections in Christ shine forth. Thus the elect church fills Christ, without which Christ is not complete!
  3. Implications and conclusions.
    1. The privilege and honor of being in Christ is greater than anything in this world.
    2. Abide in Christ; exercise the power of the life of Christ which is in you.
    3. Realize the power of every member of Christ’s body is to be measured by the power Jesus has at God’s right hand.
