- The setting.
- Jesus was sleeping in the stern of the boat (23; Mark 4:38) obviously exhausted.
- A great wind storm arose which was so fierce that the ship was covered with the waves (Mt. 8:24) filling with water (23).
- Jesus immediately rebuked the wind and the raging sea.
- This was obviously a wonder wrought by the power of Jesus.
- Unbelief always tries to explain away the miraculous.
- The power of the Lord Jesus was exercised through His merely speaking, “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39).
- He who was so obviously a weak human (slept) manifests Himself as Immanuel.
- God records this event that we “might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, …” (John 20:31).
- Aboard the ship with Jesus, we can never perish.
- The ship of the Church is controlled by the Captain of our salvation and it shall never perish.
- The storms of suffering and affliction do arise against us and we are very weak and powerless, but Jesus is aboard with us.
- Jesus is the Lord who makes all things new.
- Therefore our trust is not in our faith to save us but Him Who is the Object of our trust.
- When we stare at the wind and waves we will doubt His care even after watching Him show His care in many miracles.
- In seeing such power over the winds and waves, the disciples knew that they were in the presence of the holy God.
