Psalters: 250, 392, 405, 356
  1. The setting.
    1. Jesus was sleeping in the stern of the boat (23; Mark 4:38) obviously exhausted.
    2. A great wind storm arose which was so fierce that the ship was covered with the waves (Mt. 8:24) filling with water (23).
    3. Jesus immediately rebuked the wind and the raging sea.
  2. This was obviously a wonder wrought by the power of Jesus.
    1. Unbelief always tries to explain away the miraculous.
    2. The power of the Lord Jesus was exercised through His merely speaking, “Peace, be still” (Mark 4:39).
    3. He who was so obviously a weak human (slept) manifests Himself as Immanuel.
  3. God records this event that we “might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, …” (John 20:31).
    1. Aboard the ship with Jesus, we can never perish.
      1. The ship of the Church is controlled by the Captain of our salvation and it shall never perish.
      2. The storms of suffering and affliction do arise against us and we are very weak and powerless, but Jesus is aboard with us.
    2. Jesus is the Lord who makes all things new.
    3. Therefore our trust is not in our faith to save us but Him Who is the Object of our trust.
      1. When we stare at the wind and waves we will doubt His care even after watching Him show His care in many miracles.
      2. In seeing such power over the winds and waves, the disciples knew that they were in the presence of the holy God.
